8:45 a.m. Welcome

Judge Diekhoff, Presiding Judge of the Board of Judges of Monroe County, was elected to serve as Monroe County Judge in November 2004 and began her judicial service in January 2005. She presides over a criminal docket, as well as four problem-solving courts.

Karen Wrenbeck

Karen Wrenbeck, President of the Monroe County Bar Association, received her B.S. in French & Cognitive Science from the University of Michigan and her J.D. from Indiana University – Maurer School of Law. Karen was admitted to practice law in Michigan in 2012 and Indiana in 2013. She found her calling at the Monroe County Public Defender’s Office, first as a Paralegal and then as a Deputy Public Defender since May 2014. In this position, Karen represents indigent clients in cases ranging from criminal felonies and misdemeanors, CHINS/TPR, juvenile delinquency, child support contempt, mental health commitments, and appeals.

Justice David, Indiana Supreme Court, received his undergraduate degree from Murray State University. He received his J.D.  from Indiana University at Indianapolis Robert H. McKinney School of Law in 1982. He also graduated from the Indiana Judicial College and the Graduate Program for Indiana Judges.  After graduating from law school, Hon. David served in the JAG Corps of the United States Army from 1982 to 1986. Once retired from active duty, he entered the Reserves.  Hon. David retired from the military in November 2010.  Prior to his appointment to the Indiana Supreme Court, he was a judge on the Boone County Circuit Court. He joined the circuit court in 1995. He also previously worked as an attorney and corporate counsel.

Loretta Olesky

Loretta Oleksy is the Deputy Director of the Indiana Judges and Lawyers Assistance Program (JLAP).  Loretta received her BA from DePauw University, her MSW from Indiana University, and her JD from Indiana University McKinney School of Law.  Loretta’s career path has included positions with Prevent Child Abuse Indiana and Child Advocates Inc., as well as running her own law practice.  In 2007, Loretta accepted a position with the Indiana Offices of Court Services, where she held various positions before moving to JLAP in 2013.  She is a frequent speaker on topics of mental health and wellness.

Jeff Kehr graduated from Indiana University in 1994 with a B.A. in History and Economics and a certificate in Business Management from the Liberal Arts and Management Program (L.A.M.P.) through the Honors College. In 1996, Jeff contacted the Monroe County Prosecutor’s Office and offered to volunteer as an unpaid law clerk. In January 1998, after Jeff had been a licensed attorney for 1 month, he was offered the opportunity to prosecute felonies. He now serves as the Chief Deputy Prosecutor for Monroe County.

Kendra G. Gjerdingen chairs the Appellate Law Group at Mallor Grodner LLP and handles the legal needs of private and business clients in civil litigation and family law.  Her concentration includes family law and jurisdiction, interstate and international custody disputes, appeals, and civil litigation. Kendra is a leading family law and appellate lawyer in Indiana.  She has extensive experience in jurisdictional disputes, including representation of clients in Hague Convention cases, as well as those involving interstate custody disputes. She is frequently called upon to assist fellow practitioners and members of the judiciary in understanding the complexities involved when parents live in different states or countries.  Kendra is a Registered Family Law Mediator and a Certified Family Law Specialist, by the Family Law Certification Board.  She is a past-chair of the Indiana State Bar Association Appellate Practice Section.

Monroe County Prosecutor, Erika Oliphant earned a B.A. in General Studies, with a science concentration, from the School of Continuing Studies at Indiana University in 2003.  Her summers were primarily spent interning, first as a Legal Advocate at Middle Way House in 2007 and as an intern at Indiana Legal Services, Inc. in 2008.  During her third and final year of law school, she received an externship as a law clerk in the Monroe County Prosecutor’s Office. She graduated from the Indiana University Maurer School of Law in 2009. After passing the bar she began working as a deputy prosecuting attorney for Monroe County.  In 2019, she was sworn in as the Monroe County Prosecutor.

11:00 a.m. Am I a Racist??!!: First steps in recognizing and dealing with implicit bias

Professor Jeannine Bell received her J.D. from the University of Michigan in 1999 and then joined the IU Maurer School of Law, where she teaches in the areas of criminal law and procedure.  She was appointed Richard S. Melvin Professor of Law in 2015. In 2018, she was honored with the Leon H. Wallace Teaching Award, the highest teaching award bestowed upon a faculty member. From 2005-2006, Bell served as an American Bar Foundation Visiting Scholar. She is a nationally recognized scholar in the area of policing and hate crime and has written extensively on criminal justice issues. Bell’s research is broadly interdisciplinary, touching on both political science and law, and relying on her empirical expertise.

A: Law Firm Management: Succession Planning

Maryann O. Williams, an attorney with Jones, McGlasson, Arter & Siefers, P.C., has been been an attorney for the last 30 years in Southern Indiana. Maryann primarily practices in the area of family law including divorces, child support, custody, adoptions, guardianships, and paternities. She also is a registered family mediator and a guardian ad litem.

B: Social Media Research

Detective Guidry entered into Law Enforcement in 2003 after specializing in communications while on active duty in the US Army.  Since 2011, he has specialized in computer and mobile device forensics with additional emphasis on the internet and social media.

C. Student Disciplinary Process

A native Bloomingtonian and graduate of IU and the IU McKinney School of Law, Amelia founded Lahn Law LLC in 2014 to help college students navigate the academic, personal, and Title IX (sexual assault) misconduct process. Her practice also includes criminal defense; family law; K-12 student conduct; and representing IU faculty and staff in employment-related administrative proceedings.  Certified as a Civil Rights Investigator by the Association of Title IX Administrators, she also provides Title IX investigations and policy guidance to private and public universities and colleges.

B. Welcome to Collaborative Law

Carrie graduated from Indiana University Kelley School of Business in 1993, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing, and from the Indiana University Maurer School of Law, in 1998.  She is a partner at Mallor Grodner LLP. Her primary area of practice is family law, including divorce, child custody and support issues, premarital agreements, adoptions, guardianships, and paternity matters. She also practices in landlord/tenant law and civil litigation.

Kara Reagan is a partner with Schulz Reagan, LLC. She has focused almost exclusively on family law throughout her fifteen years of practice and was trained in the Collaborative process by Stu Webb and Ron Ousky in 2008. In addition to advocating for clients in both Collaborative and non-Collaborative settings, Kara regularly serves as a Domestic Relations Mediator and Guardian ad Litem.

C. No Contact Orders v Orders of Protection

Lynn Freeman Keller is the Domestic Violence Deputy Prosecutor for Monroe County, Indiana, where she handles all stages of prosecution for cases involving crimes between current or former intimate partners. Lynn received her Juris Doctorate and Master of Social Work degrees in 2010 after she completed a dual-degree program through California Western School of Law and San Diego State University. Lynn focuses on evidence-based prosecution and is continually looking for ways to increase collaboration and coordination between community agencies to better meet the needs of survivors.

Seth Lahn is a Hoosier by choice, having moved to Bloomington in 1989 to serve in the Bayh administration after clerking for a federal judge in Philadelphia and then practicing for almost six years with the New York firm of Webster & Sheffield. Seth has served as Counsel to the President of the Indiana State Bar Association (2011-12); on the Board of Governors of the ISBA (2011-14); and on the Indiana Pro Bono Commission (2012-15).
